Summary:
This Case Study investigates the conceptual ambiguity of hard and soft news by applying a factorial survey. By focusing on how journalists understand this important concept in journalism research, the goal of the study was to identify the dimensions that comprise the concept. This Case Study discusses and explains the steps researchers need to take to conduct a factorial survey, including designing vignettes, vignette allocation, data collection, and analysis. Key challenges are addressed, such as creating vignette sets, recruiting journalist participants, and managing the statistical complexity of the data. Although the findings of the original study underscored the utility of factorial surveys in journalism research, researchers can apply these lessons to improve the design and implementation of their own studies in various areas of media and communication studies.
