- Summary:
- This Case Study is based on original research into the teaching and learning and wider needs of first-generation (or first-in-family) students studying at an elite U.K. university during the time of the online pivot engendered by the COVID-19 pandemic. It addresses the practical problems around conducting semistructured interviews online between June 2020 and October 2021. It also examines the methodological challenges (a) around finding participants who met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the study, (b) around empowering participants to offer critical feedback on their university experiences, and (c) around getting them to suggest mitigative measures that might improve experiences. Readers will learn that, significant challenges notwithstanding, first-generation students can be encouraged to become involved in this type of project and that conducting semistructured interviews online can be a highly effective means of generating rich qualitative data. Furthermore, the very process itself can empower students and yield important pedagogic benefits.
