Summary:

In the analysis of egyptological material, ignorance or misinterpretation of facts in the fields of zoology or behavioural biology frequently give rise to mistakes and confusion. Therefore the book begins with a detailed presentation of the five relevant species: the spotted hyaena, the brown hyaena, the striped hyaena, the aardwolf, and the African wild dog. Subsequently, images of striped hyaena of the dynastic period are investigated. They appear for fattening, as sacrifices, hunting kill and wild animal, hunting assistant, as well as in other contexts. Next, the symbolic content and the imagery of hyaena in ancient Egypt are analysed on the basis of demesne terms, literary evidence from ancient Egypt, pictures of later periods and notions of hyaena in antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Bible, and present-day Africa and Asia. The book ends with considerations of the use of hyaena in ancient Egyptian culture, their representation in ancient Egyptian art, and an epilogue regarding studies on fattening hyaena recently published after the completion of this book.
