"In The Movies of Racial Childhoods, Celine Parreñas Shimizu examines early twenty-first-century televisual and cinematic narrative representations of racialization and its impacts on the sovereignty of children, particularly Asian American and Asian children in independent global cinemas from the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Shimizu considers how cinema renders Asian American children and youth through sexualized racial difference, infantilization, and premature adultification, focusing on the portrayal of experiences of precarity and grief, how they are racialized, and how they affect different sexual identities and capacities. The book uses psychoanalytic approaches to understand the psychic and bodily process of their particular coming of age in cinematic representations.
