- This autobiography extended beyond the author to include the other members of the prominent Quaker family into which Bowen was born. One brother invented the iron lung; another founded Harvard School of Public Health. Bowen herself was a bestselling American biographer who won the 1957 Philadelphia Award and the 1962 Women's National Book Association award. Family Portrait was her last book.
