- Summary:
- "In Before the Fire Dogs Steal the Sun, Crystal Mun-hye Baik offers an intimate cultural history of war, illness, banishment, and estrangement through the experiential lens of her family. Beginning with her father's death and mother's psychiatric hold in 2022, Baik draws on diasporic grief as a felt form of thinking and writing, rather than an object of study. Drawing from her interdisciplinary training in Korean diasporic studies, feminist memory work, and cosmologies of grief and ancestral mourning, Baik situates her parents' lives within the enmeshed arcs of Japanese colonialism, war, division, and transoceanic migration. In doing so, she reckons with diasporic genealogies of precarity that have configured the everyday lives of her parents and ancestral communities. Drawing on diasporic grief as a praxis of thinking and writing, Baik offers a reparative approach to remembering through the gifts of listening and returning. Before the Fire Dogs Steal the Sunis a meditative study consisting of different genres of speculative writing that span from narrative prose and the visual essay to the epistolary mode and ancestral mourning rites"-- Provided by publisher
