Summary:

Among the ideas that frequently appear in the historiography of Northern Minas Gerais, one that stands out is a dualistic interpretation that contrasts the sertão with civilization/modernity. There is a region that, since colonial times, has been exploited, invaded, or disrespected by external agents, whether they be the Portuguese Crown, the State, or Enlightenment culture. In this same vein of interpretation, in an effort to criticize the authoritarian and exclusionary modernization process of the 20th century, a hypothetical traditional culture that resists exogenous attacks is idealized. These ideas seem more prominent in texts that are more openly engaged, in which the demands of the present, which otherwise affect any social analysis, preside over the construction of the approach, even at the cost of clashing with empirical evidence to the contrary. (...) The present collection takes another path. The authors examine concrete situations, with a keen understanding of the agents and institutions in their temporalities, without forcing the facts to fit as precedents for the political and symbolic struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries.
