- Summary:
- Starting from the assumption of a strong integration into international flows of people, goods and capital that allow them to retain a significant portion of the economic surplus produced, the focus is, however, on the changes in lifestyles and the consequences of the encounter between migrants from different origins. It shows how the drama of stigmatization, disputes over territories, the marginalization of family farmers in rural areas and wage earners in urban areas unfolds between "gauchos" and "maranhenses". Drawing on documentary sources, statistics and between views, the author unveils layers of the process of constituting a space in which strong social segregation, a conflicting encounter of ethnicities and new forms of exploitation are revealed, bringing together pieces of a diverse and unequal Brazil.
