Some of these treaties were made between Indian tribes without the United States as signatory. Most of the records in these files were taken from the incoming correspondence of the Office of Indian Affairs and that of the Secretary of War relating to Indian affairs. The ratified treaty files are arranged by treaty number assigned by the State Department (the custodian of the original treaties), thereby making the files the equivalent of a chronological arrangement by date of signing of the treaties. The unratified treaty files are arranged chronologically The original ratified treaties are reproduced as M668.
