- Summary:
- In a number of applications for small engines, such as generator sets for recreational vehicle, mobile, and marine use, and general utilities applications, a need has risen for more stable operating speeds over wide load ranges. Higher cost mechanical governors have been used to address these needs in most cases. This paper presents the design of a new, electronic governor system whose performance rivals that of much higher cost governor systems used on larger engines. The design followed makes use of a novel approach to the actuator/linkage function, and provides a unique approach to the electronic circuitry leading to a highly-reliable, long-life electronic module with safety features not found on comparable units. This paper describes the basic design philosophy, the analysis performed, and the test results obtained in creating a product which appeared on a commercial product within 18 months of inception of the program
