- The design and performance of an electric van with extended range capability is described. The vehicle platform is the Chrysler T115 minivan. A low emissions, alternate fueled (CNG, LP, methanol), internal combustion engine auxiliary power unit (3 - 5 kW) is employed for range extension. SAE J227 C-cycle performance of 100+ miles is attainable using low maintenance gelled electrolyte lead-acid batteries. A prototype has been built and is currently being evaluated. Also described is the design of an advanced drive system for the vehicle employing light weight, high efficiency permanent magnet motors and a hermetically sealed electric flywheel for increased acceleration capability and higher efficiency during regenerative braking
