Summary:
The work reported is part of a project aimed at improving the toughness of both neat resin and fibre reinforced phenol-formaldehyde moulding compounds for high performance engineering applications. The importance of the nature of the interface between the thermosetting phenolic and the thermoplastic in determining the impact strength and toughness of the matrix and moulding compound is demonstrated.Assessment of toughness has employed a Fracture Mechanics approach which has shown good agreement with other techniques such as Instrumented Falling Weight Impact (IFWI)
