Summary:

The calculation of bearing lives using the standard formula represents a simplified method which indicates the life which is actually reached only some of the time. The a23 factor used to modify the calculated life has been primarily centered around lubrication. It can now be shown that although the lubricant is extremely important other factors such as the bearing type and its load can have a significant effect on the actual life and can be used to design more cost-effective bearing arrangements
