Summary:
Since commercial introduction in 1984, the use of Polyurethane Reaction Injection Molding (PU-RIM) for the manufacture of Automotive Modular Windows has undergone substantial growth. This may be attributed to the continued emphasis on aerodynamics, complex styling, and a trend toward flush glazing. This growth has been accompanied by improvements in PU-RIM formulations which have increased productivity in the molding of complex modular window gaskets.Improvements in PU-RIM chemistry for modular windows are the subject of this paper. These include the compatibilization of ethylene glycol in polyether polyols and the development of fast curing RIM systems with improved mold release.A comparative assessment of ethylene glycol and diethyltoluenediamine (DETDA) extended RIM systems for modular windows will be discussed. The data show the processing advantages of ethylene glycol extended systems for this application
