Summary:
In order to make quality magnesium castings, whether for die, sand, or permanent mold cast applications, correct molten metal handling practices must be known and followed. This requires written procedures of desired work practices for every step of the molten metal operation. Only after correct procedures are established and consistently followed by all personnel involved can a consistent quality product be realized. Consistency must be the first step in achieving quality and is probably the most difficult step to achieve. This paper deals with breakdown (melting) techniques, temperature control, transfer methods, and proper protective atmospheres that lend themselves to producing a quality magnesium alloy product
