Summary:

Habitability and environmental control life support systems (ECLSS) for interplanetary vehicles and bases must advance toward closing the environmental control loop and the driving issues are recycling waste and eliminating trash. Hybrid systems combining physicochemical and ecological processes are the next logical step and may be the key to developing a nearly closed ECLSS for one to three year duration missions. Habitability subsystems must also contribute to minimizing or eliminating trash/waste products.
