- Summary:
- This paper describes the elements of a systematic overall procedure to help design, develop and assess automotive components to meet service durability requirements. The principal experimental and analytical techniques which contribute to the design to product' loop are described. These include definition of the service duty, use of experimental stress techniques during development stages and the product proving facilities. The role of fatigue life assessment methods which help expedite the development stage is illustrated. In addition, the benefits of incorporating structural integrity assessment as part of the initial design are pointed out, together with future trends which would see an increasing use of expert system' approach to assist design for durability
