- This paper outlines the current status of an SAE effort to develop a minimum set of requirements for a Class B automotive data communications network. It is the intent of the sponsoring SAE subcommittee that these requirements will form the basis for the eventual evolution of an automotive industry data link standard. An overview of the proposed network interface is provided along with specific implementation details in such areas as bit definition, noncontiguous byte operation and message acknowledgement. This paper makes frequent reference to the SAE Recommended Practice, J1850, and it is the intent of the SAE subcommittee that any application of this network must meet all of the requirements of J1850 before it can be considered "compatible" with the SAE proposed Class B communications network
