- Summary:
- The successful operation of a piston-ring pack-liner-lubricant system in an adiabatic engine will not only require the development of ring face materials, liner surface materials and lubricants, but also the implementation of models which can define the environment in which the materials and lubricants are expected to operate. The purpose of this paper is to identify work which has been previously conducted in this area and to outline the elements of a new model which has been developed to integrate the effect of combustion pressure, ring movement and oil characteristics along with those variations in contact loading caused by cylinder liner and ring distortions due to mechanical and thermal loads. In addition, an advanced bench wear tester is described. This device was developed to permit the determination of wear characteristics of materials under actual operating conditions
