Summary:
Oxide ceramic fibers were developed many years ago and have found extensive use as high temperature insulation and refractory. Recently, oxide ceramic fibers have been used in reinforcing metals and polymers. These ceramic fibers offer reasonable high temperature properties at low cost.Characteristics of Standard Oil's aluminosilicate type fibers and their application as a reinforcement for aluminum alloys are described. The improvement in tensile and fatigue properties, especially at elevated temperature, of aluminum alloys by incorporation of aluminosilicate fibers is demonstrated
