Summary:
General Motors' Saginaw Division and Vanguard Project, both located at Saginaw, Michigan, have developed a unique CAD/CAM methodology. This methodology comprises solid modeling and database management utilities to integrate design and manufacturing engineering disciplines.A central master solids database containing initial stock geometry and part geometry to support machining operations is created. This database is accessed using a database management utility. The applications that run from this central database are numerical control programming (NC), finite element analysis, engineering process sheets, part drawings, mass property and interference analysis. In addition, the database management utility contains update mechanisms to ensure that all applications run at the same product design revision level. The advantages include shorter lead times, better quality and lower costs for new designs
