Summary:
Market pressures on automakers exist today as never before. Rapid progress is being made in the transition towards a state-of-the-art world class approach to manufacturing. This paper presents an overview of findings from research to identify factors defining world class stamping, and their associated costs and returns. Press speeds are often increased by over 50 percent by the switch from tandem to transfer equipment, while capital investment is actually reduced; the use of shorter press lines further reduces investment and maintenance costs; and modern, well-maintained presses and optimally designed parts allow the use of carefully selected parts integration and double-attachment strategies, yielding production speed-ups and tooling cost reductions.By employing the full range of world class techniques, the cost of a greenfield stamping plant may be only one-quarter that of a traditional facility.
