Summary:
The design of vehicles with transverse mounted engines frequently calls for a decoupling of the tilting motion of the engine from the exhaust system. A particularly successful method is the installation of an exhaust joint with seal ring in the exhaust system.GOETZE AG has developed a totally new material concept for exhaust joint seal rings. Rings made according to this concept have already proven themselves in several million vehicles. The paper describes the GOETZE material concept and the test methods and equipment. Problems associated with existing design of the exhaust joint are also discussed. Design guidelines for the exhaust joint system are given with the aid of examples. Finally, other sealing systems that can be sealed with the above material concept are identified
