- Summary:
- Recent developments in metal coatings and compression moldable thermoplastic composites technology have led to the development of metal/composite laminates. The novel feature of these laminates is the thermoplastic composite material is molded directly onto the metal substrate. This results in a "hybrid-type" composite that exhibits high stiffness, increased energy absorption, and smooth, metallic surfaces. Projected automotive applications include bright exterior bumpers, IP panel structures, door intrusion panels, and wheel covers. Metal/thermoplastic composite structures can provide cost-effective and highly functional alternatives to traditional materials applications
