Summary:
With total production exceeding 15 million pumps worldwide, the distributor type injection pump of Robert Bosch GmbH has proven itself over the last 12 years. So far the pumps have been used mainly in IDI passenger-car engines, and also to a lesser extent in low-speed DI engines. The new European generation of small, very-high-speed DI engines for light-duty commercial vehicles has resulted in a new area of application. For this purpose, the injection pressure and the injection rate have had to be increased by a factor of 2 - 3, with the pump outer dimensions remaining unchanged. This paper reports on the measures necessary in order to achieve the high pressure and on what development work had to be done in order to guarantee good durability as well as good hydraulic stability. Furthermore, this paper will explain how governing and start-of-injection control were improved
