Summary:

Current Ford mid-range diesel trucks are powered by engines purchased from other OEM's. With the ever increasing competitive pressures from overseas, as well as North American manufacturers, the need for a cost effective power plant for the raid-range market segment was quite evident. Studies indicated that, with Ford Motor Company's experience in designing, manufacturing, marketing and servicing diesel engines on a worldwide basis, the Company was in an excellent position to undertake the development of a new line of mid-range diesel engines.The program was launched in early 1982. It required that a 6 cylinder 165 HP engine be in production within three years and that other 6 cylinder versions in the 185-235 HP range follow approximately one year later. The result of this program was a new line of diesel engines with excellent performance and fuel economy characteristics. The new engines for the North American market meet regulatory requirements for emissions and the durability goals for this application class
