- Summary:
- Together with the reduction of fuel consumption and exhaust pollution, noise reduction is one of the highest priority targets for combustion engine development. Direct injection diesel engines in particular have higher noise emissions than other combustion engines, but they have distinct advantages in fuel consumption.A solution of this noise problem on production engines by basic practical methods is shown and is documented with various measured results and some concrete examples of development and noise abatement measures. For engine-internal measures, those for combustion in particular are treated in full and the parameters influencing the combustion noise and the conflict with other development aspects are indicated. For engine-surface measures, various acoustically optimised engine components and their efficiency are presented. For completion, other important possibilities for noise abatement are mentioned, such as mechanical noise reduction and measures on the vehicle
