- Summary:
- The turbocharged Formula 1 (F-1) racing engine has been the focus of significant development since 1977. Beginning in 1983, the F-1 turbocharger has undergone dramatic development to evolve from a modified commercial diesel engine turbocharger to a highly specialized product whose materials, processes and components are direct derivatives of advanced gas turbine engines. Designed expressly for high boost levels and high temperature capability at the lighest possible weight, these F-1 turbochargers have permitted engine manufacturers to obtain well over 1000 hp from 1.5 liter engines. This paper describes the component technology utilized by one company to meet the needs of this specialized, demanding environment
