Summary:
The collection and analysis of analog signals has become a very important part of most engine research efforts. Digital oscilloscopes are commonly used to collect analog information because they have good resolution, response time, and storage capacity. Microcomputers are typically used for data reduction and analysis. This paper describes the coupling of a digital oscilloscope and a microcomputer to form a versatile data handling system.A digital oscilloscope and a microcomputer were connected via their RS232 serial ports to provide a system for acquiring, digitizing, and storing analog data, with provision for subsequent analysis, reduction, and presentation. A complete listing of the subroutines required for data transfer from the oscilloscope to the microcomputer is supplied, along with a discussion of several proven applications of this system for use in internal combustion engine laboratories
