- Summary:
- In recent years the use of interactive computer graphics (ICG) in structural engineering has increased dramatically, and it seems that it can be adapted successfully in performing collapse analysis of structures, and evaluating the structural integrity of bus body structures in accident situations. With ICG the geometrical description or modification of a vehicle structure (preprocessing) for analysis (processing) can be expedited and accomplished with fewer errors and less time, and one can display the results of the analysis (postprocessing) and interpret them visually in an easy manner. Whereas, general or special purpose computer codes without graphics capability, usually give enormous amounts of output results for structural collapse analysis. Consequently, the study of deflection characteristics and deformed configuration, and collapse mode of bus body structures in accident situations becomes a very difficult task. ICG facilitates the evaluation process for determining the structural integrity of bus body structures in order to meet the appropriate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements. The graphics program used in this paper has a distinctive feature; that is, all the communication of the user with the system is accomplished graphically rather than by using digital means
