Summary:
Analytical solid modeling is an approach to geometric modeling which is particularly well suited to current analysis modeling techniques such as finite element subdivision. Analytical solid models are composed of mathematically continuous regions, such as parametric cubic solids, which can be automatically subdivided into discrete regions for analysis models. This paper discusses an approach where ASM is combined with the ability to define solid primitives, and perform Boolean set theoretic operations such as intersection, union and difference as operations to these primitives.Advantages of this hybrid approach include ease of construction, the ability to convert the results of Boolean operations to continuous ASM solids, and the use of free-form solids in the construction of primitives. This implementation of Boolean operations as a higher-level construct in ASM allows for the representation of solid and analytical models in a unified database. In addition, it represents a totally new form of boundary representation, enabling the support of sculptured solids without polygonal approximation. Also discussed is the effects of this hybrid approach in CAE areas such as design layout, finite element subdivision and geometric analysis
