- Drum brake design concerns facing designers/engineers today are improved reliability, performance, and customer satisfaction. This paper describes the design of a web guided backing plate concept for a family of non-servo drum brakes to meet these concerns. The paper presents the evolution and development of these non-servo drum brakes using web guided backing plates from conception to production. In addition, an innovative design of a two-piece, light weight, web guided backing plate as a derivative of the web guided concept is discussed
