Summary:
THIS PAPER PRESENTS a description of a general purpose, computer aided engineering design methodology which has been employed in the design of adiabatic engine components. The application of the design methodology is demonstrated through the discussion of the results of a thermal and structural design study. The performance of four piston design options; (1) 100% steel piston with oil-jet cooling, (2) 100% steel with oil-splash cooling, (3) silicon nitride piston cap and steel base with oil-splash cooling, and (4) ZrC2 /Brunsbond/steel composite piston with oil-splash cooling are discussed
