- The value of CAD/CAM for productivity improvement is well recognized. However, in an effort to rapidly implement the latest hardware/software technology and obtain an early return on investment, the task of facility design may be underestimated, resulting in later problems with user acceptance, operational inefficiencies, and a failure to realize full potential benefits.This paper describes a 55-workstation CAD/CAM installation in the Chassis Engineering Office of Ford Motor Company, where evolution of facility designs has kept pace with continuing advances in computer graphics. Topics discussed include workstation ergonomics, functional equipment arrangements, requirements for air conditioning and electrical installations, and safety/ security issues related to personnel, data, and equipment. Also presented is an overview of Chassis Engineering's current computer systems and typical applications involving Computer Aided Design, Analysis and Manufacturing
