An introduction and philosophy is provided for the separately published: Electronic Displays - an Ergonomics Handbook. This is largely based on a critical review of over 200 recent papers, a selected bibliography is provided. Information was abstracted on the basis of relevance to road vehicles and general applicability to driversThe information is presented in a form accessible to Engineers and Designers. It provides a design aid rather than design solutions. The main chapter is concerned with ergonomics design principles. There are smaller chapters dealing with the specific ergonomics characteristics of vehicle instruments and of the various electronic technologies. The chapter on Ergonomics Design Principles deals with auditory displays and controls related to displays but there is more information on visual aspects. Physical aspects such as contrast, size and colour are covered; also the location, viewing angle et cetera Other sections cover intelligibility, mode of presentation, and character generation
