Summary:
A method has been developed for determining the damping and stiffness of an elastomeric engine crankshaft vibration damper by using the frequencies where the peak ring acceleration and amplitude occur. An FFT analyzer with integration capabilities and a linear accelerometer were the instruments used for making the necessary measurements. The resulting damping calculation correlated very well with the damping determined by other methods. The FFT used in these tests lacked frequency expansion capabilities, which could result in a substantial error in the calculated damping value for low damping elastomers
