Summary:
A "total vehicle" approach to automotive multiplexing involves interconnection of several diverse electronic systems. To ensure system compatibility, concise definition of communication protocols is required. The International Standards Organization Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model provides a framework for protocol specification. In this paper an interpretation of the functions of the seven layers of this model is given followed by a description of protocols implemented in an experimental multiplex vehicle
