The performance of turbocharging systems on vehicle diesel engines has improved substantially in recent years but pressure continues for further developments to improve efficiency, boost at low speeds, flow range at high pressure ratio and response, with different emphasis for different engine applications. The performance of a range of system options is reviewed, including resonant intake, sequential turbocharging, variable geometry, two-stage (series) turbocharging, compounding (with or without engine insulation), Hyperbar, improved engine to turbine energy transfer, charge air cooling, electronic control as well as conventional turbomachine development
