The United States has long been the most productive nation. On a more personal level, the superior productivity of this nation has given American citizens a standard of living which has been the envy of the rest of the world. Overall national productivity depends on the performance of all economic sectors within the United States. The goods producing sectors, e.g., manufacturing, mining, and agriculture, are of particular importance since output of these sectors enters international trade. Consideration of productivity at a national level is interesting but gives little indication of what can be done. Improving productivity among plants, companies, and industries requires actions at every level starting with the individual employee. Quality of work life can be valuable to the extent that it allows individuals to maximize their contributions to the goals of the company. Herein, productivity is discussed with emphasis on variations between nations and industries, but everyone should remember that improved productivity is the overall goal
