- The finite element method is now being used for designing low-noise cylinder blocks. Either static or dynamic analysis is generally used to determine the block structure. However, investigation of the cylinder block behavior of a running engine shows that the vibration consists of two phenomena, which are the initial elastic deformation and the natural vibration. Therefore, it is necessary to study both phenomena by using simulation techniques in order to determine the optimum design of a low-noise cylinder block, taking into consideration its weight.In this study, static and dynamic finite element analyses were applied to simulate each phenomenon, and the relationship between the static and dynamic response and the components of the cylinder block was examined.The results indicate that the modification for the cylinder block to reduce the initial deformation is different from one to suppress the natural vibration. Thus, both static and dynamic finite element analysis should be utilized in designing low-noise cylinder blocks
