Summary:
Hot forging of powder metal preforms(P/M forging) is a process of growing interest and importance for the mass production of automotive parts. In spite of P/M forging's excellent reputation in the automotive industries, the technology has yet to receive wide acceptance it deserves. This paper reviews the key areas of the P/M forging technology: process, material, mechanical properties, machinability and preform design. Some technical factors that have impeded the growth of P/M forging are discussed as a guide to future growth. New technologies are also introduced, and recommendations for the future research directions of these new technologies are made
