Summary:
A wide range of quality control and mechanical tests were performed on many of the high-strength steels welded in the automotive industry. The most useful tests for describing the spot weldability of these steels were determined to be (1) the peel or chisel test for evaluating ease of welding in the plant, and (2) weld tensile tests for verifying the mechanical properties associated with service performance. Using practical experience gained in the last few years as well as related data on plain carbon steels, these weldability tests can be applied to automotive production and service performance
