The Federal Boat Safety Act gave the United States Coast Guard authority to require boatbuilders and marine equipment manufacturers to comply with safety regulations in the design and construction of their products. Since 1972, regulations have been published with requirements for safe powering, safe loading, flotation, fuel systems, electrical systems and compartment ventilation.
