Summary:
This paper describes automobile connector design approaches to eliminate failure of connections from vibration, heat, chemical contaminants and other hostile elements of engine compartment environments. Conventional, non-sealed, low temperature connectors have been recognized as a weak link in the reliability of an automobile's growing electronic content. Results of development and testing have shown that a combination of sealing and temperature resistant technologies derived from aerospace connectors, and materials and processes from computer and communication connectors, can produce high-performance connectors that better withstand these environments, decreasing interconnection-related failures of vehicle electronics
