Summary:
The work reported in this paper has been conducted by a team from GE-Aircraft Engines, GE-CR&D, and Sundstrand under a contract sponsored by the USAF, Wright Laboratories, WPAFB, Contract No. F33615-90-C-2052. The objective of this effort under the subject contract is to prove the feasibility of an Internal Starter/Generator (IS/G) through the preliminary design stage and demonstrate potential solutions to the engine integration issues for an electrical machine based upon switched reluctance machine technology. This paper reports on the results of the preliminary integration design and shows that an electrical starter/generator up to a rating of 350 kW could be integrated into the subject engine without major modifications. The discussion of the unique electrical machine design challenges raised by the integration into the gas turbine as well as the engine modifications for accepting such a component are included. Recommendations on additional development work and suggestions for testing of such hardware are also given
