Summary:
Optimization techniques are powerful tools to aid in the design of complex engineering systems. While these techniques contribute directly to engineering design, they also help manage the compromise/trade-off phase inevitable in the design of today's complex automotive systems. Additionally, optimization provides the organization the opportunity and mechanism to determine its cost/design goals at the inception of the engineering process. While this paper will focus on the use of Microsoft® Excel as an engineering optimization tool, the techniques discussed apply to any spreadsheet with optimization macros and the capability to call external subroutines
