Summary:
The development of an automotive wheel bearing with integral speed and temperature sensing capabilities, specifically designed for anti-lock braking systems (ABS), is described in this paper. Efficient use of internal space permits the sensor to be integrated in a popular bearing configuration (generation II, outer race rotation) in which integrated sensing capabilities are more challenging to implement. A number of design features are implemented to strengthen output signal, increase accuracy, and make the package more robust than current external sensing systems
