- A parametric study has been conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics which considers the effects of various parameters on the maximum temperature of a static drive shaft. Parameters investigated were: proximity between heat source and drive shaft, airflow past drive shaft, drive shaft thermal conductivity, heat source emissivity, and heat source surface temperature. Heat source surface temperature and airflow past the drive shaft had, not surprisingly, the strongest effects on the drive shaft temperature. An interpolation algorithm can be used to predict drive shaft temperatures when input parameters fall anywhere within the levels tested. Also relaxations in the algorithm have been made to allow for limited extrapolation when supported by theory and verification tests
