Multiplexing provides a way to reduce wiring bundle size, weight and cost. It supports controls and communications that cannot be handled easily by discrete wire. Both SAE J1708 and SAE J1939 are being used as part of the vehicle's electrical and electronic systems. Advancements in semiconductors, software, electronics, connectors and cabling have led to improved multiplexing systems. Issues in cost, size, validation and testing have been studied.
