Summary:
A most recently developed technique for shape optimization is the rule-based method. It does not require gradient information and multilevel searches and is less mathematically involved. Several schemes have been developed for the design rule engine of this method. This study proposes a new scheme that improves on the method effectiveness while maintaining its simplicity and low cost. Three examples that illustrate the scheme effectiveness are presented. The examples show that the scheme is superior to other schemes, when compared on the basis of scheme simplicity, versatility and effectiveness. Volume reduction of 57% and final stress value of up to 99% of allowable stress are attained with this proposed scheme
